Fierce pride and Belfast blood flowed through the veins of the men who made the Ship of Dreams a reality. Young men like Alfie Cunningham and William Campbell had toiled long and hard so that Titanic, the ship that put Belfast on the map, would be the greatest the world had ever seen.

How would they have felt when designer Thomas Andrews offered them their very own place on the ship’s maiden voyage? Two young men, these ‘Titanic Boys’ sailing on a dream of their making, a piece of engineering magic of which they were two of the wizards.

New York and adventure beckoned – Alfie would try his Belfast charm with the girls, and Willie would scale the heady heights of the Statue of Liberty. Life had opened up into a broad prairie of opportunity.

The ‘Guarantee boys’ never contemplated Titanic sinking in their wildest dreams, but when the journey of a lifetime turned into a nightmare, few would have felt the loss like these wide-eyed Belfast boys.

My great uncles worked on Titanic and I've always been very proud of that. Two were Carpenters and so as skilled workers received £2/wk. The others were Labourers and paid £1/wk as they were considered to be unskilled. A group of people often overlooked are the seven men and a young boy (Samuel Scott aged 15) who died during her construction. My great uncles were disappointed not to be going on 'the trip of a lifetime' - they had mates in the GG. After the sinking they were naturally, relieved, they hadn't been chosen but mourned the loss of their friends. My granny lived with us and she sparked my interest in Titanic - about 45yrs ago with her stories from Titanic her brothers told. My uncles worked on the Canberra in the sixties and I worked there for 4yrs in the nineties - three generations so far. Ever hopeful one of my six nephews or two great-nephews will make it four or even five generations.

A titanic loss
Near countless rivets
Mountains of coal, to heat and form and melt
Blood, sweat and lives to match the pride that was felt
Lavishly fitted out, no expense spared
Many hundreds to experience the virgin berths
Excitement and celebrations as they board the biggest ship on earth
Stupendous, colossal ....titanic
They were not to know of the horror and panic
In that icy sea with no help to come
Insufficient lifeboats with only room for some
The dignity with which they met their end
Husbands and wives, family and friends
In The deepest grave to be laid to rest
After being found they’ll be left where they are ..we know its best.

In the credits at the end, the name should be Artie Frost, not Alfie Frost!!! His name was Anthony Wood Frost and he went by Artie. (Check with the Belfast Titanic Society.) (My grandfather Edward Whitley knew Frost and also worked at H & W on the Titanic). Hope you can get this error fixed. It is a really nice video otherwise.
