The Boat Factory
Venue: The Barnett Room, Belfast Harbour Office
Times: 20 Oct 2011 - 29 Oct 2011, 7.30pm
A stage play which has been touring in smaller venues is
“The Boat Factory” by Dan Gordon. Gordon and director, Philip Crawford have deliberately chosen smaller venues to stage the play in order to reach out to an audience who would not necessarily think about going to the theatre. It has even been staged in prison. Here it is staged as part of the
Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen's, followed by a three-date tour.
Again, it is a two man play, the central theme of which is the friendship between two Harland and Wolff workers throughout their careers at the Yard. It is not a play about Titanic but it would be impossible to write a play about the shipyard without mentioning the most famous ship. The two characters look back on the triumphs and tragedies from the vantage point of the gantry. Harland and Wolff is about so much more than the Titanic and likewise, so is “The Boat Yard.” The play has received sponsorship from Titanic Foundation Limited, the charitable board of trustees who will own the building, Titanic Belfast when construction is complete.
